This new Collings C-00 knocked us off our feet at the recent Fretboard Summit in Chicago, so much so we couldn't leave without it! A vintage sound, without all the hassles of vintage guitar upkeep, this is truly a newly made, golden-era guitar.
The C-00 is a refined, Collings take on the budget builds of the 1930s that have gone on to be the guitar of choice for blues, old-time or anyone looking for a responsive, punchy, mid-range focused guitar. In true Collings fashion they have taken the best parts of a vintage guitar, and delivered that vintage vibe with the precision, attention to detail and world-class build quality that we've loved about their guitars for decades.
We've been excited for this guitar to arrive since the prototypes and wow was it worth the wait. Featuring a vintage inspired all black finish with a firestripe guitar, the aesthetics and appointments of this guitar harken back to conversations with Collings about one of our shop favorite vintage guitars and how this look is both understated and iconic.
Here with an Adirondack spruce top, paired with a Honduran mahogany back and sides and the addition of a rosewood bridge/fingerboard, this mix of tonewoods provides the perfect platform for a dynamic, mid-range focused and responsive guitar that really does have the grit and growl of the '30s classics. Rosewood, being softer than ebony which is typically found on Collings C-models, adds to the tonal character of the guitar, and really does make a difference in the bloom of each note.
The lightly built, balanced, custom bracing delivers a resonant and lively guitar, you can feel the top and back moving and responding to both fingerstyle and flatpicking, with the headroom to handle any sort of attack. The custom V shape profile feels softened and incredibly comfortable when compared to the vintage-inspiration, while still providing the mass and balance that adds to the desired dry, fundamental tone.
