This Collings SJ is a custom ordered one-off with well-considered tweaks and design descisions. Featuring a striking black top over natural back and sides, the contrast between the light and dark, especially where the top, binding and sides meet is an absolute celebration of this amazing set of flame maple. The addition of the tigerstripe guard harkens back to some of our favorite pre-war black top builds, and really sets off the small jumbo body shape.
Once we went with the black finish we immediately knew what top to go with. Old-Growth Sitka. There's something about the way old-growth wood responds, especially Sitka, that naturally has a quick, dynamic response right out of the case. The added benefit of a black top meant there would be no compromises on the aesthetics of the Sitka - it could be entirely about the tone.
We took the customizations one step further by ordering this SJ up with a 24 7/8" scale length, rather than the standard 25 1/2". That subtle tweak, which takes the edge off the tension on the guitar, allows for a warmer, subtly blended response that really complements this Jumbo body and dynamic maple back and sides.
An incredibly example of what Collings can do visually, sonically and a testament to the quality of their craftsmanship. Includes a free Mass Street setup and a TKL hardshell case with Collings badge.
